The best time to change is when you don’t think you need to...

An article in one of the legal rags last week – pictures of the logos of two failed firms at the top. I read the words of wisdom about performance and billing frequency and debt collection........and all those things that are pulled from the drawer as good turnaround tactics.

But – hold on. Turnaround? Turnaround is by definition when it’s almost too late. What these articles miss is all about timing. This situation does not arise overnight.

So what am I saying? It’s simple. Turnaround action should be taken all the time. We shouldn’t wait for a crisis. But everyone does. Do we know why?

It’s about comfort. One of the biggest dangers facing the professions right now is that performance is often accepted as “alright”. There ain’t no such thing.

Comfort is a reason for doing nothing or (worse) - the easy stuff. Far better have the difficult conversations when there is strength and the ability to make choices.

Do I think it’ll happen? For most, no. They will only change when they need to. They are the followers and they always will be.

The leaders in any industry are the restless ones.

They change all the time.
